Giving a false promise, a man from Bodi, lured a widow also from the same locality of giving her high returns and allegedly took away Rs. 30 lakh from her.
Following a complaint, Theni District Superintendent of Police directed the District Crime Branch police to register a case of cheating, breach of trust and among other Sections under IPC.
Police said that Chitra, wife of late Gandhirajan of Krishna Nagar, here was known to A. Kapilraja also from Balaji Nagar here. He had reportedly told the woman that he owned 54 acres of cardamom estate in Kerala and had paid some advance to purchase another 85 acres.
Further, he had also claimed to have advanced huge sums in Munnar to procure land in which he had planned to build a resort. In this connection, he also told the woman that a bank had ‘in principle’ sanctioned an advance.
Over a period of time, when Ms. Chitra appeared to have shown some interest in the business, Kapilraj had lured her to join him as a partner and he had entered into an agreement too.
Subsequently, he had asked her to part with Rs. 30 lakh. Towards this, the man had also entered into an agreement in July 2017 of giving her attractive returns.
However, as months passed, when there was no word about the business and when he kept his distance from her, she became suspicious and demanded her money back. The accused had threatened her with dire consequences and even went to the extent of lodging a complaint against her with the police on charges of usury.
Based on her complaint, the SP directed the DCB police to investigate and register a case. Further probe is on.
