A district vice-president of the BJP, Taramoni Roy, was allegedly involved in the assault of a mentally challenged woman in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district late on Monday night. The woman was beaten up by locals on suspicion of being a child lifter.

Denying the allegation, district BJP president Debasish Chakraborty told
The Hindu
that “she (Ms. Roy) was trying to save the woman from being assaulted.”

The incident took place in the Barogharia gram panchayat area of the district’s Dhupguri bloc.

“A case of attempt to murder has been lodged. No one has been arrested. The woman suffered head injuries in the assault and her condition is stable now,” the police said.
