United Electrical Industries Limited (UNILEC), known as ‘meter company’ in Kollam, is all set to become the first public sector company in Kerala to acquire smart meter technology.
Embarking on a diversification path with a couple of new projects, the company will now have three new wings including LED street light production unit, renovated water meter manufacturing unit, and a research and development department.
Ministers A.C. Moideen, J. Mercykkutty Amma and K. Raju will inaugurate the newly added units on the company premises on Wednesday. M. Naushad, MLA, will preside over the function.
N.K. Premachandran, MP, and Mayor V. Rajendrababu will be the chief guests.
Air break switches
UNILEC, which has been manufacturing and supplying 11-kV air break switches to the Kerala State Electricity Board since 2007, will now start the production of smart meters for measuring energy, water, and cooking gas.
“We will be getting the technology to develop net meters used in solar applications, smart meters, and pre-paid meters from C-DAC [Centre for Development of Advanced Computing] in Thiruvananthapuram.
An MoU [memorandum of understanding] has been signed with C-DAC in this regard, making us the first public sector company to have smart meter technology,” said S.R. Vinayakumar, managing director, UNILEC.
It is expected that the smart meters will have a huge demand as the KSEB has plans to introduce them to consumers above the consumption slab of 500 units or above per month.
He said the company was currently in the final phase of a project enabling it to manufacture 10,000 street light control switches per year and was looking forward to orders from the KSEB.
In 2018-19 the company received a working capital of Rs. 5 crore along with another Rs. 5 crore for the manufacturing of smart energy, water and gas meters.
Company officials said this year they were expecting a turnover of Rs. 50 crore as the turnover of the first three months of the financial has already crossed Rs. 3 crore.
“We are expecting orders from the KSEB for 11-kV air break switches (21 crore) and street light control switches (8 crore). And if we get orders for LED street lights from local self-government institutions as well, we can easily meet that target,” he said.
