The first round of Mission Indradhanush, an initiative launched by the Union Health Ministry, as a special drive to vaccinate all unimmunised and partially-immunised children and pregnant women by 2020, under the Universal Immunisation Programme (UIP), was launched in Yadgir and Raichur on Monday.

The programme will go on till July 24.

Venkatareddy Mudnal, MLA, who inaugurated the programme in Vishwaspur village in Yadgir taluk, said the Indradhanush campaign — vaccinating pregnant women and children below 2 years and between 5 and 6 years — was the key programme announced by the Union government. “Under this campaign, every single beneficiary should get vaccinated compulsorily to prevent disease,” he appealed.

Mr. Mudnal also suggested that officials of the Health and Family Welfare Department take all initiatives to reach the 100% target in ensuring all were vaccinated. Officials, who presented, said that the second round of the campaign would be carried out from August 13 to 22 and the third from September 10 to 19.

Pregnant women and children below 2 years of age will be vaccinated to prevent various preventable diseases, they added.

District Health and Family Welfare Officer Bagawanth Anawar chaired the programme.

Laxmikanth, Anilkumar Talikote and others were present.

In Raichur

Officials of the Health and Family Welfare Department inaugurated the programme in Raichur.

Laxmibai, District Health and Family Welfare Officer, said they aimed to cover 4,329 children below 2 years of age followed by 2,101 children between 5 and 6 years, and 536 pregnant women across the district.

Satyareddy, Vijaya.K, M.N. Naditha, Mohammad Shakeer, Vidya and others were present.
