“The accused pinned her to the ground and also manhandled her father, brother and her friend,” the official claimed.

Days after a woman lodged a second complaint against her neighbour for allegedly stalking and harassing her, the father of the accused turned him in as he was embarrassed of his son’s conduct. Earlier in September, based on her complaint, the Borivali police had arrested the accused, a businessman by profession. But he had managed to secure bail.

According to the police, both the accused and the victim are acquainted for the last 12 years and live in the same locality. “After the accused managed to get her number from a WhatsApp group created by his society, he started texting her. Initially, the woman used to reply to his messages, and then he started calling her, which made her uncomfortable,” said an official from Borivali police station, where the two cases have been registered. “The complainant warned the accused against calling her and also started ignoring him. This is when he started following her on his motorbike and on a few occasion even abused her publicly,” added the official.

The 23-year-old, then approached the Borivali police station and lodged an FIR against him in September for stalking, abusing and criminal intimidation. He was arrested and subsequently released on bail.

Out on bail, the victim’s ordeal continued. The phone calls and messages never stopped, after the woman blocked his number, the accused started calling her from different mobile numbers and even PCOs. “After coming out on bail, he started following her during Navratri and Diwali festivities. He also asked her why she hadn’t been replying to his messages,” said another officer.

The woman then informed her parents, who again approached the Borivali police station and handed over a written complaint. “On Thursday night, as she stepped out of her home to visit a friend, the accused saw her and started trailing her auto-rickshaw on his bike. As soon as she alighted, the accused started demanding an answer on why she was avoiding him,” the official said.

In the meantime, the victim called up her father, who rushed to the friend’s place. “The accused pinned her to the ground and also manhandled her father, brother and her friend,” the official claimed.

“After learning about the incident, the accused’s father also reached the spot and thrashed his son publicly. The accused sustained bruises and was taken to a hospital. Upon his discharge, the father got his son to the police station and we placed him under arrest,” the officer revealed.

Shah has been booked under relevant sections of the IPC for stalking and molestation. He was produced in holiday court on Sunday and has been remanded in judicial custody.
