Efforts to give a fillip to community-based tourism promotion activities at Palair reservoir gained momentum with the launch of a new boat with a capacity to carry about 25 tourists on the most sought-after boat ride in the major water body in Kusumanchi mandal on Tuesday.

The new boat costing around Rs. 16 lakh was inducted to the existing fleet of two mini-speed boats being operated by the local youth groups in the Palair lake.

The move was necessitated owing to persistent demands from the tourists for a modern boat equipped with safety features such as lifejackets and others for ensuring a hassle-free and pleasant boat ride.

More than a decade ago, select members of several youth groups of Kusumanchi mandal were trained in power boat handling at the National Institute of Water Sports in Goa as part of a community-based tourism promotion project on public-private-partnership mode implemented by the government agencies.

The introduction of the new boat is expected to also augment income for the local youth groups.

Minister for Roads and Buildings T Nageswara Rao formally launched the new boat at the reservoir on Tuesday evening.
