No traces of formalin or any other preservatives was found during the spot test conducted on fish samples at the market on EVN Road on Tuesday.

Officials from the Department of Fisheries and the Tamil Nadu Food Safety and Drug Administration Department inspected the fish market and lifted random samples from shops in the afternoon. Samples were tested and they were free of formalin. They warned the traders against using preservatives or banned chemicals and asked them to ensure hygiene.

Officials said that they have been raiding fish shops for the past two weeks and samples were lifted from 70 to 80 shops of which none tested positive for chemical substances.

The traders were asked to use alternatives for plastic bags or encourage customers to bring their own bags or vessels while purchasing fish.
