The premises of the now-defunct HMT watch factory in Tumakuru was handed over to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in a ceremony on Saturday.

Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara urged ISRO to provide jobs to children of former employees of HMT Watches who had worked in the factory for four decades.

S.P. Muddahanume Gowda, MP, said that he had twice tried to save the HMT unit in Tumakuru but was not successful. He expressed hope that ISRO would step in to fill the gap. More than 4,000 jobs would be created in the district and it will boost the economic activity, he said, adding that the space organisation would be responsible for the overall development of the district.

Minister Venkataramanappa, S.R. Srinivas, MP for Chitradurga Lok Sabha constituency, Chandrappa, MLA, Jyothiganesh, Joint Secretary of the Department of Space, ISRO, and S. Kumaraswamy, general manager of HMT, were among those present.
