The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Monday disposed of a petition seeking action against V. O. Chidambaranar Port Trust in Thoothukudi on a charge of polluting the environment.
A division bench of Justices C. T. Selvam and A. M. Basheer Ahamed disposed of the petition after the VOC Port Trust represented by its Chairman refuted the claim of the petitioner that it was operating without a valid ‘Consent to Operate.’ The VOC Port Trust said that it had taken several measures to control pollution and protect the environment. Representatives of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change had also inspected the premises.
The port had a dedicated Environmental Cell to coordinate with the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board.
The air ambient quality was tested and the port had also initiated dust suppression system to control dust emission. The petition was not in public interest, but mischievous, the port said.
