Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday met with a group of eminent citizens from the Muslim community.
Prominent intellectuals like Prof Zoya Hassan, former member of the Planning Commission Syeeda Hameed, educationist Illyas Mallik and former member of Sachar Committee Abu Saleh Sharif were part of the meeting.
Though the Congress party did not issue any official statement, sources said the meeting was organised by the minority cell of the Congress party to encourage community leaders to articulate their views on various contemporary political issues.
“A number of lawyers, historians and university intellectuals met Rahul Gandhi and discussed public policy with him today. They gave their feedback and more such interactions will take place in future,” former External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid said after the meeting.
Congress minority cell chief Nadeem Javed and Mr. Khurshid represented the party at the meeting.
The meeting is significant as the Congress chief was seen to be adopting a soft Hindutva approach during the crucial Assembly elections in Gujarat and Karnataka in an attempt to repackage the Congress party.
