Contractors and contract labourers of the Sterlite Copper plant submitted a petition to the Collector a day after meeting Information and Publicity Minister Kadambur Raju.
They demanded that the plant be reopened. “I’m not able to afford food, children’s education and health expenses of my family. The plant should be reopened so that our jobs could be restored,” S. Murugan, a contract labourer, said in his petition.
Earlier, the Minister had promised preference for jobs for Sterlite employees when various development projects, including the Thoothukudi-Madurai industrial corridor, desalination plant and a new ship yard would be set up.
