Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara awarded a cash prize of Rs. 10 lakh to the golden girl Hima Das as a token of appreciation for becoming the first Indian woman to win a gold medal in a world athletics track event.
The prize money was awarded on behalf of Sri Siddhartha Academy of Higher Education, said Mr. Parameshwara in a tweet on Saturday. He called Ms. Das’ grit and perseverance “extremely inspirational for thousands of aspiring sportspersons” across India.
The Deputy Chief Minister also holds the additional charge of Minister for Youth Empowerment and Sports and is also president of the Karnataka Athletics Association and vice-chairman of the Athletics Federation of India. A well-regarded athlete in his youth, Mr. Parameshwara had a reputation for being a good runner.
