A get-together of Sayed Shihab family (Qabeelathu Shihabiyya in Arabic), held here on Saturday, caught the attention of the Islamic world by claiming direct familial link with Prophet Mohammed.

According to Islamic historians, Sayed Mohammedali Shihab Thangal of Panakkad, former State president of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), was the 40th descendant of Prophet Mohammed through his daughter Fatima.

The gathering reminisced the arrival of Shihab family in Kerala three centuries ago. The descendants of Sayed Ali Shihabuddin, who landed in Kerala in 1767 from Yemen, are today known as the Sayed Shihab family. Their predominance at Panakkad, near here, earned them the common name of Panakkad family.

From Sayed Hyederali Shihab Thangal, the current IUML supremo, to the youngest member of the family, there was no discrimination at the gathering. Everyone greeted each other, hugged each other, and even posed for selfies.

Sayed Munawwarali Shihab, the State president of the Muslim Youth League, was leading in selfies. Sayed Ahamed Husain Shihab presided. Sayed Hyderali Shihab Thangal inaugurated the gathering. IUML national general secretary P.K. Kunhalikutty and M.P. Abdussamad Samadani were guests at the meeting. Mr. Samadani delivered the keynote address.
