Three separate incidents of temple burglaries in the district, during the past three days have left the police perplexed.
Police suspect the involvement of a single gang, given the striking similarity in modus operandi. Valuables and cash (offerings made by devotees in hundis) worth about Rs. 1.45 lakh were reportedly stolen by the burglars in the three incidents. In all the three theft cases, the burglars targeted the hundis and in one incident that was reported from a temple at Padamati Narsapuram in Julurupadu mandal on Monday night, the thieves took away the hundi itself, sources said.
In the first incident, thieves struck a temple in Guttamallaram village in Manuguru mandal and decamped with gold and other valuable ornaments. The other theft was at Kodandaramalayam at Vepalagadda in Sujathanagar. “We have constituted a special team to track down the gang involved in the temple thefts,” said a police officer of Kothagudem sub-division.
