In a bid to increase the number of women passengers travelling by the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) buses, the public transport utility is likely to allow free travel for women passengers on the 8th of every month.

Currently, all women passengers can avail this facility only in Tejaswini buses once in a month. However, the department is willing to make travel free for women in all PMPML buses once in a month.

Ajay Charthankar, PMPML’s joint chairman and joint managing director, said, “After speaking to all the concerned stakeholders, we will take the decision of making travel free for women passengers once in a month. Currently, only Tejaswini buses offer a free ride to women, however, we want this facility to be extended to all our buses.”

Talking about the initiative, Nidhi Joshi, a regular passenger, Tejaswini buses, said, “I am a regular Tejaswini bus passenger and on the 8th of every month, there is a tremendous response from residents. This initiative will increase the number of women passengers using PMPML services.”

Meanwhile, the city bus provider will be inducting 940 buses to its fleet by the end of 2019.

Charthankar said, “These new buses are the need of the hour. Currently, there are many buses in our fleet that are in a bad condition. With the induction of these new buses in our fleet, the old ones will be eventually discontinued in a phase-wise manner.”

Out of the total 940 buses, 500 are electric air-conditioned buses, while the rest 450 will be compressed natural gas (CNG) buses.
