The Southern Railway’s freight performance has exceeded the projected target in the first quarter of the financial year ending June 2018. The Railway department had loaded 9.32 million tonnes (MT) of freight during the first quarter of 2018-19 against the Railway Board’s target of 8.01 MT. The percentage growth of freight for the quarter was 16%.
Overall, the Southern Railway has seen a big jump in freight loading for this financial year when compared to 2017-18.
A senior official of Southern Railway said the freight comprising coal, dolomite, limestone and iron ore saw an increase of 48%. Coal loading constituted 62% of the total freight during the current year.
Likewise, dolomite and limestone loaded at the Chennai Port increased from 0.184 MT in 2017-18 to 0.428 million tonnes during 2018-19, recording a growth of 133%.
