It turned out to be an evening to cherish for many as legendary Carnatic vocalist M.L.Vasanthakumari’s musical journey was recalled at a function to mark her 90th birth anniversary at The Music Academy on Tuesday.
Interspersed with concerts in honour of Vasanthakumari, one of the coveted female trinity in Carnatic music, ‘MLV 90’ had speakers reminiscing her as a remarkable person who broke into the male bastion and one with a distinct style.
Addressing the function organised by Samudhaaya Foundation, Union Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman recalled her childhood spent in Tamil Nadu listening to Carnatic music and renditions of M.L.Vasanthakumari. Music has a special place in Tamil Nadu and music lovers play a key role in nurturing the traditional music form. She also appreciated the disciples of veteran singers who not only imbibed her music but also her qualities of generosity.
Ms. Sitharaman also released a souvenir and presented a donor cheque of Rs. 1 crore to Preethi Srinivasan, co-founder of Soulfree, a public charitable trust working towards severely disabled persons.
Releasing the commemorative stamp on M.L.Vasanthakumari, Manoj Sinha, Union Minister of State for Communication (independent charge), said the release of stamp was a befitting tribute to the classical musician who was a child prodigy. He also elaborated on the achievements of the Department of Posts that has reinvented itself through various schemes.
‘A fine human being’
Describing Vasanthakumari as a musical genius and a fine human being, N. Murali, president, The Music Academy, said she was known for her creativity and spontaneous musical expression. She was a remarkable star in both Carnatic and film music. But, one form did not affect the other. He also lauded the disciples for carrying forward the musical tradition of M.L.Vasanthakumari.
R. Seshasayee, chairman of IndusInd Bank, said it was an event to celebrate the pathbreaker in her sphere who brought new lustre to music. It was also an occasion to celebrate her spirit of generosity.
Earlier, Sudha Raghunathan, founder and managing trustee of Samudhaaya Foundation spoke on the foundation’s activities for social causes.
