Coimbatore City Police and Rotary Club of Coimbatore South joined hands for various supportive initiatives to the transgender community. On Tuesday, the police and Rotary Club handed over push carts, sewing machines and idli makers to 60 transgenders to promote self-help group activities among them.

City Police Commissioner K. Periaiah launched the support activities for transgenders. He said that the support measures would help the transgenders become self reliant and transform their lives.

Organisers said that 10 sewing machines, 10 push carts and 10 idli makers were handed over to the group of 60 transgenders at the event.

The city police had recently assisted four transgenders from Saibaba Colony to buy autorickshaw.

S. Lakshmi, Deputy Commissioner of Police (law and order); D. Krishnakumar, president of Rotary Club of Coimbatore South; K. Sundarraj, Assistant Commissioner of Police (law and order), Coimbatore Central; A.N. Meenaskshi from Imayam NGO and office-bearers of Rotary Club of Coimbatore South took part in the event.
