A team of representatives from the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) southern zone called on Finance Minister Yanamala Ramakrishnudu here on Tuesday and urged him to take steps for lowering the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on vegetables and fruits.
The delegation headed by D. Tirupathi Raju submitted a memorandum to the Minister at his camp office and said that the existing GST on fruits, vegetables and dry fruits was 12% whereas the same on dairy products, fish and meet was only 5 %.
“Since the fruits and vegetables too are perishables and had low shelf life, there is an immediate need to lower the GST on these produce to 5%. Similarly, tax has to be lowered on readymade food mixes and flours,” Mr. Raju said.
Mr. Ramakrishnudu assured the delegation that the issue would be raised during the GST Council’s meet scheduled for July 21. He also advised the members of the delegation to bring the issue to the notice of the Central government as well.
