Tension prevailed on the Chennai-Kolkata national highway near the Kaza toll gate near Kaza village of Guntur district on Sunday when a tanker overturned spilling dangerous sulphuric acid on the roadside.

According to the police, the tanker carrying sulphuric acid was heading to Chennai from Kakinada and rammed a pole on the roadside near Kaza before overturning.

Officials suspect that the vehicle lost control due to brake failure, and the driver managed to pull it over and hit a pole minimising the damage.

Responding to the rescue calls, teams of State Disaster Response Force and National Disaster Response Force teams swung into action. As the acid spillage was dangerous even to the vegetation in the area, rescue teams filled the area with sand. Rescue personnel wearing chemical-resistant jumpsuits plugged the leak of the tanker. Later, the tanker was lifted using earthmovers after a struggle for more than four hours.

No casualties were reported from the mishap. Guntur Urban SP Vijaya Rao and other higher officials visited the spot.
