Three men including two sanitation workers suffocated inside a sewer tank in Ghaziabad on Sunday, the police said.

Rescue operation

It is suspected they died due to suffocation because of toxic fumes inside the tank. The rescue team took three to four hours to recover the bodies, the police said.

The sanitation workers have been identified as Raushan lal and Mahesh, the police said, adding that the identity of the third victim is yet to be ascertained. All of them are aged between 25 and 40 years.

“The incident happened around 9.30 a.m. when the contractual workers were cleaning a tank at the pumping station of a sewer treatment plant in Loni. One of the workers slipped inside the tank while working,” said a senior police officer.

When he failed to respond to his colleagues for 15 minutes, another worker jumped inside the tank in an attempt to save him. When the second worker failed to emerge from the tank for 20 minutes, a local jumped inside to rescue him, the police said.

Other locals and workers alerted the police after the trio failed to respond to their calls.

“A police team rushed to the spot. The men were brought out of the tank with the help of cranes. They were rushed to the district hospital, where doctors declared them brought dead. The matter is under investigation,” said Durgesh Kumar Singh, Circle Officer, Loni.

The District Magistrate has ordered an inquiry into the matter.
