Two people were killed after a lorry crushed them under its wheel on the busy Narketpali-Addanki State highway, abutting the town, here on Friday.
The victims were beyond recognition after the accident. They were later identified as K. Narsimha, 70, a local alms-seeker and U. Ramesh, 45, a private employee belonging to a nearby village Aitipamula.
The bypass junction, an important connection between Nalgonda town and other villages on Panagal side, is a busy centre divided by the highway.
It has been a common site for accidents. According to police, the lorry, registered with Madhya Pradesh transport department, rammed Narsimha, who was reportedly crossing the junction, and another victim who was on his motorcycle near the Indira Gandhi statue.
The Town-II police who rushed to the site took control of the scene by seizing the vehicle and taking the driver into custody.
The victims’ bodies were later shifted to the General Hospital for post-mortem.
A case was booked against the driver for negligence, and an investigation has been opened.
