The Public Works Department plans to release water into Pullampadi and New Kattalai canals for irrigation in the district on Wednesday.

According to sources, 400 cusecs will be released into both the canals, benefiting farmers of Tiruchi, Thanjavur and Ariyalur districts.

In addition to supply of water for irrigation, water will be carried to system tanks and lakes so as to fill them up.

Three tanks and lakes in Tiruchi district such as Pichai lake, Ochankulam and Kavarachankulam will be filed up by releasing water into Pullampadi canal. In addition to it, 26 tanks and lakes in Ariyalur district will get water from Pullampadi canals.

Similarly, 44 tanks in Srirangam and Thiruverumbur taluks in Tiruchi district will be filled up by carrying water from New Kattalai canal.

A senior official toldThe Hinduthat it will take about 10 days for water to reach the tail-end tanks. Most of the inlet and outlet channels of system tanks and waterways had been desilted so as to ensure smooth flow of water. Remaining works had been expedited.

In Uyyakondan canal, 600 cusecs had been released for irrigation. It had been decided to carry water to 19 tanks in Tiruchi district besides filling up tanks in Thanjavur district.

Weeding of hyacinth

The official said that the PWD had taken up weeding out works of removing water hyacinth, which had spread to a few km in the city limit along the Uyyakondan canal. Earth movers and a team of workers had been hired for removing the hyacinth. They had already started removingthe water plants from near Kuzhumayi Amman temple. It would ensure smooth flow of water in the canal. The work would be completed within 10 days.
