Muthu Rathi, 40, of Lakshmipuram near here has got admitted in the Government Hospital in Virudhunagar complaining that the Irukkangudi police had assaulted her during an enquiry over a scuffle between neighbours.

She said that a Sub-Inspector had assaulted her. The Irukkangudi police were enquiring into the incident. The police said that Muthu Rathi and her sister Muthu Pappa (41) had a quarrel with her relative C. Laskhmi (33) on July 25.

In a scuffle that followed, Lakshmi complained that the sisters had beaten up her and her daughter Muniswari, 12.

The girl was admitted to the Government Hospital in Sattur. Lakshmi also lodged a complaint with the Irrukkangudi police.

A complaint was lodged against her claiming that she beat up Muthulakshmi’s daughter Panimalar, 4. She had been treated as an outpatient, the police said. Meanwhile, Muthu Rathi, who was arrested on charge of assault, was let off on personal bail.

Sattur Deputy Superintendent of Police T. Mathiazhagan said the complaint was being enquired into.


Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Untouchability Eradication Front has condemned the police “excess” on the Dalit woman.

Its Virudhunagar district secretary, M. Muthukumar, said that the woman had sustained bleeding injuries on her limbs after she was brutally attacked with lathi.

“The SI has attacked the woman in the presence of her children. Besides, she was threatened with dire consequences, if she told others about the assault,” he said.

Stating that the woman was taken to the police station late in the night and assaulted, in violation of law, Mr. Muthukumar sought stringent action against the SI.

“Otherwise, TNUEF along with other democratic forces will conduct protests,” he said.
