The city police on Thursday suspended a woman constable who was caught on camera stealing chocolates from a supermarket in Egmore on Tuesday. Her husband was arrested by the Egmore police as he assaulted the staff who caught her.

On Wednesday, the woman constable in uniform entered the Nilgris supermarket located in Egmore as a customer. She took a few items, including chocolates, from the shelf and hid them in her pocket. The act was caught on the CCTV camera. When the staff confronted her, she gave a written apology.

In the letter, she mentioned her name as Nandhini working in the All-Women Police Station, Kilpauk. She was let off after she apologised and handed back the stolen articles.

A few minutes later, her husband Dinesh, accompanied by two others, came to the supermarket and attacked Pranav, one of the staff members. CCTV cameras recorded this footage as well.

Injured, Pranav was admitted to a private hospital. The videos went viral and top police officers ordered immediate action against the woman constable. She was suspended from service, pending enquiry.

Her husband, Dinesh, was arrested by the Egmore police on charges of criminal intimidation and causing hurt. He was remanded in judicial custody.
