Construction of a new apron at the Tiruchi international airport is expected to begin soon. With tenders already having been floated for the Rs. 40-crore project, a Mumbai-based private firm has quoted the lowest price.

The new apron will have 10 parking bays and its construction will take nine months. Construction is expected to begin in September, a senior AAI official said.

A new technical block-cum-Air Traffic Control tower is the other major project in the pipeline. The the Directorate General of Civil Aviation has approved the Safety Assessment for the construction of the new apron.

AAI has identified the site for construction of the Air Traffic Control tower within the sprawling airport premises. The height of the new tower will be 46 metres to provide the Air Traffic Controllers a 360 degree seamless view of the airport premises, the official said.

The master plan conceived for the new control tower has been sent for clearance to the internal cell of AAI. The new apron is being constructed in the wake of a new integrated passenger terminal coming up at the airport.

Bidders have already inspected the site where the new passenger terminal building is to come up. The new terminal with an elevated road will also be environment-friendly and energy efficient besides conforming to Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment) Norms.
