World Tiger Day was celebrated by the Nilgiris Forest Division during the course of the weekend.
On Sunday, the Nilgiris Forest Division organised an awareness campaign for school and college students on tiger population in India and measures to be taken for their conservation.
K. Saravabakumar, Assistant Conservator of Forests, Nilgiris Division, said that the students were explained about the role of tigers in the ecosystem, and how their continued protection would help in conserving forests and also other fauna that tigers depend on to survive.
B. Ramakrishnan, assistant professor in wildlife biology, Government Arts College, Udhagamandalam, and N. Mohanraj, environmentalist and honorary wildlife warden were the special guests at the event organised at Cairn Hill, in the outskirts of Udhagamandalam town.
On Saturday, officials at Mudumalai Tiger Reserve celebrated World Tiger Day and distributed awareness posters on tigers to volunteers.
A K Ulaganathan, Field Director of MTR, and S. Senbagapriya, Deputy Director (Core Zone of MTR), were present at the event.
