Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday accused the Congress party of using farmers as a vote bank during 70 years of its rule in the country.

He was addressing a ‘thanksgiving’ rally organised by the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the BJP in the wake of recent price hike of kharif crops.

“All the years when Congress ruled the country, it never appreciated the hard work of the farming community. The party always worked to address the concerns of “one family” and remained ignorant about the public,” he said.

Mr. Modi said the policies framed under the Congress regime were conceived only to benefit “one family.”

“Congress is baffled after we announced historic rise in the minimum support price of crops. Congress people are having sleepless nights because they stand exposed in front of farmers,” he said.

Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Capt. Amarinder Singh, in a tweet, asked Mr. Modi to announce farm loan waiver and implement recommendations of the Swaminathan Commission. “Good to know that you’ll be addressing Punjab farmers today. Please use the opportunity to announce loan waiver and full implementation of Swaminathan report. Our distressed farmers will be braving the heat to hear something positive from you. Please don’t let them down,” he tweeted.
