Dr. K. L. Rao, Minister for Irrigation and Power, said in the Lok Sabha [New Delhi] to-day [July 26] that the Farakka barrage project would be completed one year ahead of schedule. The project had reached a fairly advanced stage and would be ready by June, 1970. Dr. Rao was replying to a half-hour discussion on the project. He stoutly refuted the allegation that Russia had suggested arbitration on the Ganga water dispute. To repeated questions put by members, Dr. Rao said that the Soviet Premier had in a letter addressed to the Prime Minister Mrs. Gandhi said that “both countries should show good-will to find a solution on a mutually accepted basis as in the past as in the case of the Indus water dispute.”
