In 33rd national under-9 event
City girl Vidula Anbuselvan emerged champion in the 33rd National under-9 chess championship at Ahmedabad recently.
A class 5 student of Kingsley Matriculation School here, she scored nine points (eight wins, two draws and a loss) from 11 rounds.
A better tie-break score ensured Ms. Vidula’s victory in a four-way tie for the top spot in the girls’ category in the event.
“She trained really hard before the tournament and we were certain about her victory. The title is a reward for her hard work and dedication,” said her father-cum-coach D. Anbuselvan.
Ms. Vidula, who took to chess three years ago, made a mark, winning the girls’ crown in the State under-7 chess championship in 2017.
She finished 10th in the under-8 category at the Commonwealth Chess Championship last year.
“The national title has given me a lot of confidence to dream big,” said Ms.Vidula, who has set her sights on the Asian and World youth chess championships next year.
Mr. Anbuselvan acknowledged the support and guidance of the district, State and national chess bodies, and the school management.
