Unidentified persons broke open the front door of Bala Vinayakar Temple in Lingappa Chetty Street, R.S. Puram, and decamped with 8 kg of silver ornaments and Rs. 30,000 cash.
The theft came to light when the priest Perumal (35) turned up for the morning puja on Friday.
Forensic experts visited the temple and recorded fingerprints. Sniffer dogs were also pressed into service.
Wind-shield of a car parked on the roadside was also damaged by the culprits.
On the basis of a complaint lodged by the priest, R.S. Puram police have registered a case and are investigating.
Cars taken away
A man allegedly escaped with six cars belonging to a travel agency at Kuniyamuthur in Coimbatore.
A petition in this regard was submitted by Balashankar of Jai Games Travels.
In his petition, Mr. Balashankar alleged that R. Ajit, a known person took away six cars on different days during the end of May for a marriage and failed to return the same.
The contact numbers of Ajit and his relatives continued to be switched off, he said.
