National Commission for Scheduled Castes Vice-Chairman L. Murugan inquired the then Collector N. Venkatesh and Superintendent of Police P. Mahendran about the police firing during anti-Sterlite agitation here in which 13 persons, including four Dalits, were killed.

After meeting the Dalit victims’ family members on Thursday and visiting the areas that witnessed violence, Mr. Murugan inquired Mr. Venkatesh for an hour from 1 p.m. The former Thoothukudi Collector reportedly narrated the evolution of anti-Sterlite protest and the situation that led to the police firing.

Subsequently, the then District Revenue Officer M. Veerappan, Sub-Collector M.S. Prashanth and other revenue officials appeared before the Commission.

In the afternoon, the then IGP (South Zone) Shailesh Kumar Yadav, DIG (Tirunelveli Range) Kapilkumar C. Saratkar, Mr. Mahendran and the then Joint Superintendent of Police Selvanagarathinam deposed before the Commission.

“After inquiring the present Collector Sandeep Nanduri and Superintendent of Police Murali Ramba, the Commission will submit its report to the President of India,” Mr. Murugan said.
