Yacht Club of Hyderabad, which nurtures and grooms young sailors, has added one more feather to its cap.

Eight under-15 sailors from the club — Vamshi Nenavath, Vadla Mallesh, Santosh Banot, Chakali Katthick, Vijay Sampath, John Yerolu, Vishwanath and Sachin Bethmala — were picked by the Boys Sports Company.

YCH president Suheim Sheikh, who has been into sailing for close to four decades, says these results not only show the abundance of talent coming from different strata of society but also their grit and determination to come good.

“Yes, essentially, they are invited for the BSC selections based on the performances in various zonal, national and international meets at Hussain Sagar Lake and also at Krishnapatnam Port (Nellore) and in Chennai.

“Durga Prasad (now 16 years) was the first one to get selected after making it to the Worlds. And, the fact that majority of them are from Telangana from Social Welfare Schools and districts like Pargi, Vikarabad, Mahboobnagar, Ranga Reddy and Hyderabad is a welcome sign for the sport itself and a matter of pride for us too,” says Suheim..

“The best part of being picked by the BSC is that these young talent will be based in Goa and Benguluru and study in the Kendriya Vidyalayas as everything including academics and sports training are taken care off.

“These kids can also aim for admission in the more lucrative NDA courses too,” he says. We create a talent base and give it the kind of opportunities they look for to showcase their skills as adequate care is taken off about their fitness and even tuition also,” he says.

“In some cases, Social Welfare Department chips in for their students who excel in the waters.”
