Vedanta Limited launched the second Vedanta women’s football league 2018, under the aegis of the Goa Football Association (GFA). It will feature eight teams and 160-plus registered players.

The teams are Albert Developers SC, Ambelim SC, Churchill Brothers FC, Cuncolim Union, FC Goa, Goa Velha SC, Panjim Footballers and Sporting Clube de Goa. The first edition, held last year, had five sides.

The 2018 champion will get an opportunity to take part in the Indian Women’s League.

Karishma Shirvoikar, 16, was felicitated for representing the India u-17 team at a competition in South Africa. She was the top-scorer in the inaugural edition of the WFL.

Vedanta Group promotes football in Goa as part of the Sesa Community Development Foundation (SCDF) initiative. Among the projects are the Sesa Football Academy for budding footballers in the 14-18 age group.

Elvis Gomes, president, GFA, said: “Our aim is to make professional football more accessible to women.” Annanya Agarwal, president, Sesa Football Academy, said: “The league’s potential to unearth talent, while providing a platform to showcase their skills, is huge.”
