Manipur’s Maisnam Meiraba and Telangana’s Gayatri Gopi Chand won the boys’ and girls’ singles titles in the Yonex-Sunrise RSC all-India junior ranking badminton tournament at the Rajiv Gandhi indoor stadium, Kadavanthra, on Saturday.
Maisnam, a Prakash Padukone Academy trainee in Bengaluru, is a quick mover around the court and he brushed aside Tamil Nadu’s Siddhanth Gupta 21-10, 21-7.
Gayatri, India chief coach P. Gopi Chand’s daughter, bounced back after losing the first game to outwit Karnataka’s K. Ashwini, the fourth seed.
Ashwini appeared to have the strokes to trouble Gayatri but she was lacking in fitness and this became evident more and more as the match wore on. Perhaps realising this, Gayatri moved her well with her drops and smashes to take the title.
The results (finals): Boys: Singles: Maisnam Meiraba (Man) bt Siddhanth Gupta (TN) 21-10, 21-7. Doubles: G. Krishna Prasad & Dhruv Kapila bt Navaneeth Bokka & Savan Pavan 21-15, 21-11.
Girls: Singles: Gayatri Gopi Chand (TS) bt K. Ashwini (Kar) 11-21, 21-16, 21-14. Doubles: V. Nila & V.S. Varshini (TN) bt Shruti Mishra & Samriddhi Singh (UP) 21-10, 14-21, 21-14.
