She hasn’t had the easiest time in the Love Island villa, so it’s no surprise that Laura Anderson’s family want to make sure latest man Paul Knops is for keeps.

However, Laura’s dad David managed to put his foot in it on Sunday night’s episode of the reality show by admitting he didn’t understand why Laura and Paul hadn’t made their romance official yet.

David said: "Older people, we don’t understand something about life and growing up. When you go with someone and spend all your time with them, are you not meant to ask them out to be boyfriend and girlfriend?”

He added: “I don’t get this."

Laura, 29, later expressed her embarrassment in the beach hut.

She said: "My dad was trying to get Paul to ask me to be his girlfriend. I was like ‘Dad!’"

Earlier in the episode, the families suffered another awkward moment when Paul, 31, dropped a clanger about the setting of their date, admitting it looked like a wedding venue.

Laura’s sister Danielle was quick to quip: “Calm down!”

Laura responded: “Don’t say that to Paul, he’ll freak out.”

But Paul cleared up the confusion by revealing he was actually referring to his sister Sophia’s wedding, as she will soon be tying the knot.

Meanwhile, Laura’s dad became a hit with viewers after poking fun at former Love Island contestant Georgia Steel’s now-infamous catchphrase, dubbing his daughter “loyal, babes”.

One tweeted: “Is there anything better than Laura’s dad roasting Georgia?”

Another wrote: “Omg Laura’s dad ‘UR LOYAL BABE’ am dead.”

A third posted: “Best bit of the show. Laura’s dad is AMAZING!”
