The moments in Sanju where we saw Ranbir Kapoor playing Munna Bhai — perhaps Sanjay Dutt’s most iconic character — in Sanju were the most memorable in the Rajkumar Hirani film. From Sanjay’s bleached mop of hair to his trademark gait, Ranbir got everything right in the Munna Bhai sequence of Sanju. While Sanju scenes may look effortless, shooting for them was anything but for Ranbir and the director.

Rajkumar Hirani has been sharing behind-the-scenes videos from Sanju and the latest has the team recreating the Munna Bhai scenes. The best compliment for what Ranbir managed to do came from Sanjay himself who asked Hirani if he is still doing Munna Bhai 3.

Sharing the video, Hirani tweeted, “Watch #RanbirKapoor’s surreal transformation to Munna Bhai- … #Sanju @FoxStarHindi @VVCFilms #RajkumarHiraniFilms.”

In the video, Ranbir said, “Munna bhai jaisa kirdar nibhana bahut hi mushkil hai. I don’t think I could ever create such an iconic character. But it feels great that I could emulate a small part.”

He further said they had to do many look tests before they got the look — droopy eyes and a fresh looking face — right. Talking at the teaser launch of Sanju, Ranbir had said, “It was difficult to play the young Sanju. There were more faces we had to show; the drugs and his mother’s loss. The fun was the Munna Bhai phase.”

Ranbir had also expressed his desire for Sanjay’s approval and said, “When I was a child, I had a poster of Sanju sir on the wall of my cupboard, and through this film, I am in his shoes. I think in my life, I really want Sanju sir to like me. I know I never can be the man he is, but in whichever way that I go about in my career as a person and even through this film, I really want Sanju sir to like me because I feel that he is man that I respect a lot and I really look up to him. I hope that he feels that I have represented his life in very honest and improved way.”

Paresh Rawal essays the role of Sunil Dutt and Manisha Koirala plays Sanjay’s mom Nargis. The film also stars Sonam Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Dia Mirza, Vicky Kaushal and Jim Sarbh, among others.
