The People’s Choice Award from the just-wrapped 2023 Toronto Film Festival has gone to American Fiction<\/em> .<\/em> First Runner Up is Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers<\/em>. Second Runner Up was Hayao Miyazaki’s The<\/em> Boy And The Heron<\/em> . The Documentary Award went to Mr. Dressup: The Magic Of Make-Believe,<\/em> ,<\/em>and the Midnight Madness winner was Dicks: The Musical.<\/em><\/p>\n

Orion’s American Fiction <\/em>stars Jeffrey Wright and comes from writer\/director Cord Jefferson. It is a scathing satire on the publishing industry and its treatment of serious works by Black writers, one whose name is Thelonious “Monk” Ellison who with the made-up name Sinatra Golden decides to give them a stereotyped book “We’s Lives In Da Ghetto” as a protest but is horrified when it becomes a best seller. It is scheduled to be released in theatres in November.<\/p>\n

Voted online by audience members since 1978 and often considered a harbinger for the Best Picture Oscar, the TIFF People’s Choice Award has been won by such eventual Best Picture Academy Award winners as Nomadland, Green Book, 12 Years a Slave, The King’s Speech, Slumdog Millinaire, American Beauty <\/em>and Chariots of Fire. <\/em>Among those that went on to Best Picture nominations include last year’s winner The Fabelmans,<\/em> as well as Belfast,<\/em> JoJo Rabbit, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri, Room, La La Land, The Imitation Game, Silver Linings Playbook, Precious, Life Is Beautiful, Places in the Heart <\/em>and The Big Chill.<\/em><\/p>\n
