Heather Mills, who has been a devoted vegan for the past three decades, took to Instagram to share the front cover of a Christmas card which poked fun at the death of pigs for the meat industry.

The snow-filled scene on the card featured two pigs out in the chilly weather, accompanied by the phrase: “Don’t worry, I hear we’re getting some blankets!”

Paul McCartney’s ex subsequently fumed to The Mirror that the “grotesque” card was “lying” to “young kids that don’t understand what they mean or what pigs in blankets are”.

“They’re going to look at it and think, ‘Oh, that pig gets a nice blanket from Sainsbury’s’ – it’s gross.”

She added: “It’s one thing if they’re going to eat pork, but it’s another thing to make a joke about it. It’s just unnecessary.”

Heather reflected that when she first became a vegan 30 years ago, she felt she was regarded as “the biggest weirdo on the planet”.

However, she stated that the practise is becoming more “accepted” and that people are now realising “the consequences of the overconsumption and production and manufacturing of meat”.

Heather has founded a plant-based food company, VBites, to encourage the public to be coaxed over to a meat-free way of life.

She urged: “You can become a flexitarian before moving over to vegetarian before moving over to vegan. If people want pigs in blankets, why not have the meat-free alternative?”

Meanwhile, over on Instagram, she shared her rage with almost 8,000 followers, exclaiming: “This card from @sainsburys highlights a major historical and endemic societal issue with the way we treat these and other highly intelligent creatures.

“Having spent time uncovering the nefarious practices of pig farming, sadly I’ve seen it first-hand. If people can’t stifle their Christmas cravings, we’ve got plenty of vegan bacon and sausage at @VBitesfoods – that’s why we made them!”

VBites has worked with major companies including McDonalds, Burger King and Domino’s Pizza to help them provide sustainable vegan alternatives to their usual meat-based products, but she feels the nation needs to go further.

Tearful fans flooded the comments section, with one writing: “Is that an actual card? I want to cry!! That breaks my heart.”
