Jean Knight has passed away aged 80, with the American singer's PR firm confirming her death in a statement.
Jean, who was best known for hit 70s tracks such as Mr. Big Stuff and Think It Over, passed away on 22 November in New Orleans, Louisiana. Her cause of death is currently unknown.
Word of the singer's death began circulating after an obituary outlining her incredible career was seen by fans, with her PR firm later confirming her passing on Sunday 26 November.
The statement shared by her agency read: "Jean Knight’s legacy is not just a musical one; it is a testament to the enduring love between an artist, her hometown, and the fans who adored her."
“As we bid farewell to this iconic soulstress, New Orleans, and her global fan base join together in gratitude for the indelible mark she left on the world.
"The family of Jean Knight kindly requests privacy during this difficult time and expresses heartfelt gratitude for the love and support from fans,” the statement said.
Fans have paid tribute to the late singer on social media, with one person writing on X: "Sad news, my station was one of the first to play Mr Big Stuff! Great song, great Artist! Rest in peace."
Another added: "RIP Jean Knight… we've all sung Mr. Big Stuff a time or two!" A third fan said: "RIP Jean Knight, prayers to her family. Thank you for this classic," alongside a clip of the star performing.
Jean shot to fame in the early 70s after being discovered by songwriter Ralph Williams, who asked her to record some songs. Hit track Mr. Big Stuff was released in 1971 with Stax Records.
The song proved to be hugely popular, becoming a number R&B hit. It also went double-platinum and received a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Vocal Performance.
Jean released five albums in total; Mr. Big Stuff, Keep It Comin, My Toot Toot, Shaki de Boo-Tee and Queen. Compilation album, The Very Best of Me, was released in 1997.
In October 2007, the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame honoured Jean for her contributions to Louisiana music by inducting her.
Jean was married twice and has at least one child. She shares son Emile Commedore with ex-husband Thomas Commedore. In the early 70s, Jean was married to longshoreman Earl Harris.
