Paul McKenna to return to his roots as he makes radio comeback – 33 years after quitting Radio 1 to become a hypnotherapist
Paul McKenna is making a radio comeback – 33 years since he quit Radio 1.
The best-selling author, 59, made his name on Capital FM during the 1980s before becoming a successful hypnotherapist and selling over 12 million books.
And he’s now returning to his radio roots for a one-off show on Boom Radio this Saturday where he’ll be playing songs stretching back to the 1960s, as well as sharing stories from his career.
Paul said: ‘I’m very excited about doing this special show on Boom. My love of radio has never gone away.
‘I can’t wait to share some of my favourite tracks with listeners and maybe tell a few stories from my radio days along the way.’

Paul started his DJing career in Topshop on Oxford Street, having previously won a competition to present a ‘young DJ slot’ on London’s Capital Radio.
Aged 20, he joined Radio Caroline in 1983, the pirate radio station, before moving to Chiltern Radio.
As his burgeoning reputation on the airwaves grew, he returned to Capital Radio in 1988 until he was poached by Radio 1 where he stayed for four of years.
However, having become interested in hypnotherapy, he was soon selling out theatres with his hypnotherapist shows and being courted by television production companies, sparking his decision to leave Radio 1 in 1992.
But Paul’s love for radio has never waned, sparking his decision to make his comeback on Boom Radio, the national DAB radio station for Baby Boomers.
Boom Radio’s programme director David Lloyd said: ‘For someone to have two hugely successful and very different careers is rare – and we’re really pleased that Paul’s agreed to indulge his passion for radio once again.’
He added: ‘His love for radio to this day is clear.’
Paul, whose latest book Success For Life comes out on January 4, is not the only veteran presenter to return to the airwaves on Boom Radio.

Last month, legendary DJ Simon Bates, 76, joined the station to host a weekly show.
Boom Radio first aired on Valentine’s Day 20021 and was founded by David and Phil Riley – two veterans of the British radio industry – who spotted a gap in market for a new music radio station aimed at Radio 2 listeners.
According to the most recent radio industry figures released last month, Boom has doubled its listening year-on-year as music fans flock to the dragon to gear more of the music they grew up with.
Much of Boom’s success is thanks to its veteran presenters playing hit records from the 1960s and 1970s which appeal to their listeners aged over 50.
